Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year 2020: January 25th (Saturday)

Tim Ho Wan in Irvine

Tim Ho Wan opened it’s first Southern California location in Irvine’s Diamond Jamboree Shopping Center, serving Hong Kong’s Michelin Star quality dim sum. This shopping mall is dubbed Orange County’s International Eatertainment Destination and it can be a challenge finding parking.

Baked BBQ Bun

The baked barbecue pork bun, a favorite dish of mine, takes on a different profile at Tim Ho Wan. The bun’s outer texture is a flaky puff pastry with a sweet and savoury char siu filling inside; unlike your traditional baked bread shell and it’s a signature dish I highly recommend ordering.

Kitchen where Prep Chefs prepare freshly made dumplings and every item is made fresh and cooked when ordered.
Veggie dumpling, eggplant with shrimp, BBQ pork rice noodle roll and pork with shrimp dumpling

Everything we ordered came directly to our table from the kitchen, fresh and not from a dim sum cart.

Hot & Sour Soup, Sticky Rice in Lotus Wrap

One of the best items is the huge lotus leaf wrapped envelope containing sticky rice that’s pressed around a filling of Chinese sausage, chicken thigh and shiitake mushrooms.

From a counter-size “to go” on the other side of the restaurant’s cocktail bar (directly behind Mackie in the photo), you can order an abbreviated menu including the pork buns, shumai, and sticky rice; which are in the “to go” bag I’m carrying. 👍🏼

If you find yourself in one of Tim Ho Wan’s 6 locations in the USA; 2 New York, Houston, Vegas, Irvine and Waikiki, I’d recommend you give this place a try and ring in the Year of the Rat.

Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin), Gong Hei Fat Choi (Cantonese); translates to “wishing you great happiness and prosperity.”

Happy Chinese New Year!
